Glade: Social Media Outreach Faux Pas

I love when companies reach out to customers and potential customers through social media. The companies who do it right know that their efforts need to be personalized, one-to-one communication, not just using a site like Twitter to push their own messaging on consumers. The companies who do it best take the relationship offline when possible- like the Enthusem card I received a few months ago, the invitation I got to the Columbus Auto Show to check out new Ford vehicles and enjoy lunch, etc.

A couple weeks ago, I posted this message to Twitter:

CherylHarrison: I have returned from my two days away from the interwebz. Sleeping in til 10 on a Monday feels decadent. I am one cheerful lady right now.

And got this response from Glade:

IndulgeALittle: @CherylHarrison Glad you were able to relax this morning! Would love to send a candle from Glade to keep it going! DM w/ shipping info.

Awesome, free candle! So the package arrived yesterday, in a big pretty pink box with “Indulge yourself a little” printed on the top in gold. Aw, I thought as I opened the box, what a nice way to introduce a new line of candles.

Inside the box was this hand-written letter:
dscn0364

Hmm. I don’t have kids. Not that I know of, anyway. I also didn’t say anything about breakfast. Clearly, this letter was not meant for me. Now I’m not MAD at Glade – they gave me a free candle for nothing. And I appreciate that someone took the time to hand-write a note – and, from the look of their Twitter stream, write a LOT of notes. I wouldn’t have enjoyed my candle any less without a note – I didn’t expect one. Just… make sure you’re sending the RIGHT note. I’m sure there are people who would have been angered by this. Me? Um, free candle FTW.

I think what glade is doing with the IndulgeALittle account is great – reaching out to people to congratulate them (a co-worker of mine got one after mentioning her upcoming wedding) or help them relax. A quick Twitter search for “@indulgealittle” shows positive buzz being created for them:

mommyvents: @indulgealittle you have made a loyal brand fan.
mjdew: @IndulgeaLittle Thanks for the candle! It smells great!
joshuaarnao: @IndulgeaLittle the candle you sent me is so stinkin (in a good way) awesome, you deserve to indulge a little

Anyone else get a free Glade candle? What do you think of the promotion? Does yours smell half as good as mine? Discuss.
