Cash4Gold FTW

So Cash4Gold, in case you’ve been missing a years worth of annoyingly bad acted advertising, is “one of the largest and most respected precious metal refineries in the United States… Cash4Gold purchases second hand jewelry for refining.” So theoretically you stick all your valuable in an envelope, mail them away and get a big check sent back your way  (the name of the company is stupid, because you do not get “Cash” through the mail, dumbasses.)

Cash4Gold launched an entertaining Super Bowl ad with Ed McMahon and MC Hammer, garnishing lots of viral attention for the brand:

However, around the same time “10 Confessions of a Cash4Gold Employee” was posted online… so most people searching for the brand would find NEGATIVE publicity.

But interestingly to me, the company is taking action via the social web. Through Twitter, @Cash4GoldInc is linking those who post the link to the article to their own rebuttle article, addressing each of the 10 “scams” the former employee lists out. I initially thought the Twitter account was a bot but from the slight variations in the repetetitive Tweets I don’t think it is - and though they aren’t using the medium right because they’re just throwing content at people and skipping the interaction… I still think it’s an interesting way to quell the spread of a very big problem for them.

So far they haven’t posted a link to their Facebook page (which only has 23 fans) but I’m sure it’s coming.

Assuming they “get it.”

Nice post Cheryl. It will be interesting to see if their volume of tweets and links has any affect on Google Search in terms of getting the negative content buried deeper in the results…
